How to Convert HEIC to PNG on Windows & Mac

Updated August 31, 2026

iPhone photos come off the phone as HEIC, and a lot of software still won't touch them. PNG is one of the two obvious escapes, and the right one when you're editing the photo, need lossless quality, or are working with software that treats PNG as its native currency.

This guide converts HEIC to PNG with ConvertSave, a drag-and-drop converter for Windows and Mac that runs offline, so your photos stay on your computer.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. 1

    Drag your files into ConvertSave

Open ConvertSave and drag your HEIC photos into the window. You can drop one file or a whole selection at once. There is no upload step, because the files never leave your computer.

  2. 2

Choose PNG as the output format

Pick PNG from the format list. ConvertSave shows the formats that make sense for the files you dropped, so PNG is right there.

  3. 3

    Click Convert

Hit the Convert button. Each PNG file is saved next to the original, so you don't have to hunt through folders to find your converted files. The originals are left untouched.

The PNGs keep the same file names as the originals, so IMG_2041.heic becomes IMG_2041.png right beside it.

How to convert iPhone photos to PNG

Copy the photos from your iPhone to your computer first, by cable, AirDrop, or iCloud. Once they're in a folder, drag them into ConvertSave and convert to PNG. If your phone keeps switching back to HEIC after updates, you can also make the camera shoot JPG under Settings, then Camera, then Formats, then Most Compatible, though that costs storage space going forward.

How to batch convert HEIC to PNG

Select the whole set, drag it in, pick PNG once, and convert. Every photo converts in one pass and lands next to its original. We've tested batches of up to a thousand files.

Should you convert HEIC to PNG or JPG?

PNG is lossless, so nothing is thrown away in the conversion, and files can be edited and re-saved without generational quality loss. The cost is size: a PNG of a photo is usually several times bigger than a JPG that looks identical on screen. Pick PNG when you're editing, archiving at maximum quality, or feeding software that wants PNG. Pick JPG when you're sharing, uploading, or printing, where the smaller file wins.

If JPG is the better fit for your case, the steps are identical; see our HEIC to JPG guide for the full walkthrough.

Is HEIC to PNG conversion safe?

The risk with converting HEIC photos isn't the conversion itself, it's where the conversion happens. Free converter websites work by uploading your file to someone else's server. You usually can't tell who runs the server, where it is, or how long your file sticks around after the conversion finishes. For personal videos and photos that's a real privacy trade, and it's the reason so many of those sites are covered in aggressive ads.

ConvertSave does the conversion on your own computer. Nothing is uploaded anywhere. You can turn off Wi-Fi entirely and it still works, which is also the easy way to verify the claim. Your original file is never modified, and the converted copy is written right next to it.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting HEIC to PNG lose quality?

No. PNG is a lossless format, so the conversion preserves the image data from the HEIC. That's exactly why the files come out bigger than JPGs.

Why are the PNG files so much bigger than the HEIC originals?

HEIC compresses aggressively and PNG doesn't compress photos well by design. Several times larger is normal. If size matters more than lossless quality, convert to JPG instead.

Can I convert a whole album at once?

Yes. Drag the entire selection into ConvertSave and convert it as one batch. We've tested up to a thousand files at a time.

Do my photos get uploaded anywhere?

No. ConvertSave converts on your computer and works offline. Your photos never leave your machine.

Is ConvertSave free?

There's a 7-day free trial with all features unlocked. After that it's $9/month, $60/year, or $129 once for a lifetime license that covers 3 personal devices on Mac and Windows.
