How to Convert MP3 to WAV on Windows & Mac

Updated August 31, 2026

Audio editors, DAWs, samplers, and plenty of broadcast and voiceover workflows want WAV files, full stop. Hand them an MP3 and they either refuse it or nag you. Converting MP3 to WAV gets your audio through the door.

This guide uses ConvertSave, a drag-and-drop converter for Windows and Mac that converts offline on your own computer.

How to convert MP3 to WAV

  1. 1

    Drag your files into ConvertSave

Open ConvertSave and drag your MP3 files into the window. You can drop one file or a whole selection at once. There is no upload step, because the files never leave your computer.

  2. 2

Choose WAV as the output format

Pick WAV from the format list. ConvertSave shows the formats that make sense for the files you dropped, so WAV is right there.

  3. 3

    Click Convert

Hit the Convert button. Each WAV file is saved next to the original, so you don't have to hunt through folders to find your converted files. The originals are left untouched.

Converting other audio formats to WAV

M4A, FLAC, OGG, and AAC all convert to WAV the same way. FLAC to WAV is the nicest case: FLAC is lossless, so the WAV you get is a bit-perfect copy of the original audio.

How to batch convert MP3 to WAV

Drag in the whole folder, pick WAV once, and convert. Each WAV is saved next to its MP3. Mind the disk space: WAVs run about ten times the size of the MP3s they came from.

One honest note about quality

Converting MP3 to WAV does not restore the quality the MP3 compression removed. The WAV is a faithful uncompressed copy of exactly what the MP3 contains. That's still worth doing, because it gets the file into WAV-only software and prevents any further compression loss during editing, but the audio itself doesn't get better.

Is MP3 to WAV conversion safe?

The risk with converting audio files isn't the conversion itself, it's where the conversion happens. Free converter websites work by uploading your file to someone else's server. You usually can't tell who runs the server, where it is, or how long your file sticks around after the conversion finishes. For personal videos and photos that's a real privacy trade, and it's the reason so many of those sites are covered in aggressive ads.

ConvertSave does the conversion on your own computer. Nothing is uploaded anywhere. You can turn off Wi-Fi entirely and it still works, which is also the easy way to verify the claim. Your original file is never modified, and the converted copy is written right next to it.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting MP3 to WAV improve the sound?

No. The WAV contains exactly the audio the MP3 had, uncompressed. What you gain is compatibility with WAV-only software and no further quality loss during editing.

Why does my editor want WAV instead of MP3?

Editing tools work best with uncompressed audio: it decodes instantly, seeks precisely, and re-saves without generational loss. Many simply don't accept lossy input at all.

How big will the WAV files be?

About ten times the MP3's size is a good rule of thumb. An hour of audio lands around 600 MB as WAV.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

No. ConvertSave converts on your computer and works offline. Nothing leaves your machine.

Is ConvertSave free?

There's a 7-day free trial with all features unlocked. After that it's $9/month, $60/year, or $129 once for a lifetime license that covers 3 personal devices on Mac and Windows.
